Description
Marianne Janack (ed.), Feminist Interpretations of Richard Rorty (University Park: The Pennsylvania State University Press, 2010), xii + 227 pp. Feminist Interpretations of Richard Rorty is one of the most recent volumes in the series Re-Reading the Canon, a series that is designed, in the words of general editor Nancy Tuana, "to contribute to [the] process of canon transformation by offering a re-reading of the current philosophical canon" (ix). Leaving aside the question of whether and to what extent Richard Rorty is actually part of the "philosophical canon"--indeed, some additions to the series attest to the fact that the canon is, perhaps, already undergoing significant changes--the inclusion of a volume dedicated to interpreting the contributions of a philosopher whose work remains so controversial has the potential not only to provide insights into Rorty's views, but also a glimpse into the current state of feminist philosophy. Unfortunately, a number of factors conspire so as to prevent the text from fulfilling what I see as its unique and significant potential.
